It had to happen eventually...

Jacob lost his first tooth last night!

Given that he is only 2 this isn't actually a good thing, though in the grand scheme of things it could have been worse. Those of you who have been around Jacob might guess that it happened on the playground where he climbs on every thing he can or perhaps that it happened when he was jumping off of the couch (this by the way is something he gets in trouble for but still happens from time to time). In fact, it happened when he was getting into bed. He was a little over enthusiastic in getting to bed - he tripped and hit his mouth on the side of the bed. His right front tooth came out - root and all - and he has a couple cuts on his lip. After talking to an ER doctor on the phone (yay Kaiser) we determined that there was not a reason to take him in to the ER but we did need to take him to the dentist this morning. Although there was a lot of blood, the bleeding stopped pretty quickly with a little ice and pressure. Jacob had never been to the dentist before but did well, especially considering the circumstances. There was no damage to any other teeth and not much swelling of his gums. They took an xray and we were able to see his permanent teeth in there. The dentist told us that if we had gotten there within 30 minutes of when the tooth came out she MIGHT have been able to get it back in but even then it would only have been for cosmetic reasons. Because it was his front tooth and because there were no other problems we don't need to do anything about it. He will just have a gap until his permanent tooth grows in. He was actually back to his normal self about 15 minutes after it happened. His parents, on the other hand, were pretty shaken up! He'll take tylenol until everything heals up, and so far he's eaten applesauce and pancakes and some cantaloupe without much hesitation. He was less thrilled about the cheerios he pilfered from my bowl but in a couple of days those should be fine too.

In other news, Jacob had his first haircut over the weekend. In fact, everyone in the family went and got haircuts (Alex just went for moral support). Jacob watched Chris get his hair cut first, then sat in Chris's lap during his own haircut. He was a little nervous about the whole thing but did well. We will miss his little curl in the back, but he does look very handsome. Even with his missing tooth!

Alex continues to do well. Thankfully during all of the chaos last night he just sat in a chair and stayed quiet, just taking everything in. I was fully prepared to be up all night between Alex being hungry and Jacob being sore and possibly scared. Imagine my surprise when I woke up around six and both boys were still asleep! I guess they were as wiped out by the evening's events as we were. After all, it's been a busy few days!
