For example, about a month ago we went out to dinner and when the server came over and asked what we'd like to drink, Jacob looked right at him and said "milk". Of course, he wasn't looking at Jacob and probably wouldn't have understood even if he had heard him, but it was fun to see Jacob understand what was going on and respond appropriately. He can now open the refrigerator and reach the string cheese, but he can't open the packaging. Most of the time he gets out two - he hands one to me and then when I unwrap it he holds out the other one and says "trade you". I can understand a lot of what he says, but certainly not all of it so there is a lot of guessing that happens. If I guess wrong he says no, but if I guess correctly he says "yay". I don't think I've ever heard him say yes now that I think about it. He likes to help bake and most of the time we bake banana bread. I measure everything and he puts it into the bowl. Sometimes he wants to eat the bananas but recently he started asking to eat the banana (and everything else for that matter). He'll also hold his arms out and ask to hold Alex. This morning he wanted to carry Alex down the stairs. Usually I will let him hold Alex but obviously the stairs were not going to happen.
For his part Alex is getting stronger and getting more control every day. The other day he was sitting with his pacifier in his hands and was staring at them. If brain waves could have brought that pacifier to his mouth they would have but his hands would not listen. I promised him that some day soon he'd be able to do it himself, but for now I will help him. I've been trying to get a good picture of him smiling but it hasn't happened yet. I promise that as soon as I get a good one I will post it!
