Alex turned 1 last Thursday (November 3rd) though he wasn't really that excited about it. Jacob was excited and sang Happy Birthday to him, but Alex wasn't feeling that great to begin with and then he had to go for his checkup where he got 6 shots. At the appointment he was measured to be 30 1/4 inches which put him in the 65th percentile. His doctor was a little concerned because at 27 lbs he was in the 90th percentile for weight and at his last appointment he was 90th for height and 60th for weight. She asked if he drinks a lot of juice, but he doesn't drink any. She asked if he eats fruits and veggies and he does. He doesn't look at all like he is overweight, but there is so much focus on childhood obesity these days that the doctors are really looking for any signs so that intervention can start early. She finally let it go and sent us on our way. When I got home I got a chance to look at the printout from the appointment, which also has his last 3 measurements on it. I saw that he was 29 1/4 inches at his last appointment 4 months ago. There is no way he only grew an inch in that time - we've had to adjust his car seat and his clothes. So I measured him again, while he was standing up. 32 inches. That puts him at the 97th percentile. I emailed his doctor and her response was "that makes much more sense". We have to go back in another month for two more shots and some blood work which is now apparently standard. It is amazing all the rules and guidelines that have changed in only 2 years.
We had a little party yesterday with some of our friends to celebrate his birthday. While we had talked about having a party for some time, we didn't actually invite anyone until kind of last minute. Luckily we had a fairly decent turn out and we had a good time. Alex was initially - perturbed. He just laid down on the floor and cried. And then he crawled behind me, laid down on the floor, and cried. And this was AFTER he got up from his nap. A little tylenol, a bottle, and a little bit of time did wonders and he had a good time as well!
Tomorrow he starts daycare. He'll be in a different class than Jacob but he will be at the same school. Jacob is very excited and has been talking about it for weeks. Alex has no idea what is coming and I'm not sure he's going to take it that well, but ultimately I have no doubt he will eventually enjoy it as much as Jacob does. He has already met his teachers and some of the other kids. He will be, by definition, the youngest kid in the class for awhile because they can only take kids who are past their first birthdays. But he's still bigger than some of the other kids and he's intrigued by the fact that they can walk without holding on to anything. He has spent a fair amount of time with other kids, but almost all of it has been with me there. We will all have a lot of adjusting to do in these next couple weeks!
