Our next stop was Edisto Island in South Carolina - about an hour outside of Charleston. We stopped at Costco on the way to stock up on food. It’s not quite on the way, but it’s not too far out of the way either. When we got into the car Jacob said “no black car...light blue car”. Our rental car was black and he wanted to get back to our light blue car at home. He had another week of the black car though. He took it pretty well once we reminded him that we would be seeing Michaela - his cousin who just turned three.
The drive was uneventful except that Jacob did not sleep at all until about the last 15 minutes. Alex slept much of the way. They were both asleep when we got to the house, which gave us a chance to scope things out before letting them loose. The house was awesome though and they are obviously used to having toddlers around. They had a couple of booster seats and toddler plates and lots of plastic dishes in general. The house had 4 bedrooms. Each of my sisters and I had a room with a full bed and a twin bed, which we shared with our spouses and children. My brothers had a room downstairs and away from all of the babies. There was plenty of room to spread out and the back side of the house looked over the marsh.
This part of the trip was pretty chaotic because in addition to Jacob and Michaela, there were three babies - Alex being the oldest at 7 months. Specifically, Maddie was 4 months and Lily was just one month old. I never did decide if it was better when all the babies cried at once or when they took turns! We spent a little less time at the beach on this part of the trip - mostly because it was a lot of work getting everyone out the door. Also the waves were quite a bit bigger so the toddlers didn’t really want to get in the water. But a good time was had by all. We were all happy to be home when all was said and done but we had a great time while we were there. It was nice to have everyone in the same place at the same time and to all be on vacation. Everyone else sees each other a fair amount, but since we live so far away we don’t get to see everyone very often. As an added bonus, we got to see Chris’s sister Karen, who lives in Charleston. She and her boyfriend came out to visit for the last two days. Unfortunately, by that time Jacob had reached his social limit and he wasn’t as friendly as he would have been earlier in the trip, but it was nice to see them!
On the island there was a Serpentarium that some of us went and checked out one day. It was an interesting place with open-air islands full of snakes. The islands were surrounded by moats and walls, but I can’t help but think they could all get out if they wanted to. They also had alligators and we stayed long enough to see the alligators get fed. But it was crazy hot - especially compared to our typical California weather - so we didn’t stay too long after that.
